Designated a National Park and listed as part of France’s Natural Heritage since 2012, the Calanques of Marseille are among the most spectacular natural sites in Europe. These white limestone fjords plunging into crystal-clear turquoise waters attract millions of visitors from around the world every year.
From the Hôtel du Mucem by Esteem, there are several ways to get to the Calanques:
By car: It takes 20 to 30 minutes to reach the first calanques (Sormiôu, Morgiou). Please note: Car access is restricted during the summer (April–October) and subject to daily quotas.
By bus: RTM Line 21 connects downtown Marseille to the trailheads of the Calanques. The trip takes about 45 minutes from the hotel.
By boat shuttle: Seasonal boat shuttles depart from the Old Port (a 10-minute walk from our hotel) and go directly to the Calanques of Cassis or Sormiôu. Please ask our concierge service for more information.
Sormiôu is one of the largest and most accessible of the Calanques. Its fishing village and tiny harbor make it a unique destination. Morgiou, with its wilder landscape, is prized for its tranquility and exceptionally clear waters. En-Vau is often considered the most beautiful of the Calanques and is accessible only on foot or by boat.
Be sure to bring water, sunscreen, and appropriate hiking shoes. The best times to visit the Calanques are spring (April–June) and fall (September–October), when temperatures are pleasant and access is less restricted. Our concierge service can help you plan your trip so you can enjoy it to the fullest.
The Hôtel du Mucem by Esteem organizes guided tours of the Calanques upon request, in partnership with local tour operators certified by the National Park.
